Students from Amy Biehl High School participated in the school’s first-ever Road to College Walk-A-Thon recently, walking two and a half miles from their downtown campus to Central New Mexico Community College and the University of New Mexico where they were welcomed by Provost Chaouki Abdallah.
The Road to College Walk-A-Thon provided a way for ABHS students to visualize their path to college and the successful experiences they will have once they reach their destination. The event raised $10,000 to support college applications, college admittance exams, college scholarships and activities and classes that assist students in staying on track to graduate high school and be prepared for college.
Many high school students have a difficult time visualizing themselves at an institute of higher education. This is especially true for those who are first in their family to attend college.
Amy Biehl High School senior Gabriela Hernandez is currently a dual credit student who plans on attending UNM full time in fall 2014. “I probably wouldn’t be planning on going to college if I hadn’t gone to Amy Biehl High School, because other schools don’t have the same kind of resources,” Hernandez said.
