A woman tries to buy justice in the Yale School of Drama’s next production, Friedrich Durrenmatt’s “The Visit,” which is being staged Oct. 29-Nov. 2 at the Iseman Theater, 1156 Chapel St.
“The Visit” tells the story of a wealthy woman who returns to her poverty-stricken hometown. She promises a sum of money so vast it will return the town to its former glory days — on one condition: The townspeople must kill the man who wronged her in her youth.
Cole Lewis will direct the production, which has been translated by Maurice Valency. Lewis is a director, writer, and performer from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. She is a founding member of St. Catharine’s award-winning Suitcase In Point Theatre Company (SIP), a group of artists who strive to engage and excite through collaborative play development. As an artistic associate of SIP for 10 years, she worked on 23 original cabarets and directed six original productions. Lewis served as assistant director for the National Arts Centre of Canada’s “And All for Love” and the world premiere production of Will Eno’s “The Realistic Joneses” at the Yale Repertory Theatre, and she has directed “Mexico Play” and “Romeo and Juliet” at Yale School of Drama. She has launched a new company, Guilty By Association, and directed its first devised piece, “Ain’t Gonna Make It.”
The cast includes Celeste Arias, Mamoudou Athie, Chris Bannow, Jabari Brisport, Cornelius Davidson, Ceci Fernandez, Christopher Geary, Merlin Huff, Sarah Krasnow, Matthew McCollum, Elia Monte-Brown, Mariko Nakasone, Iris O’Neil, Mickey Theis, and Jennifer Schmidt. The crew also features Chika Shimizu (scenic design), Montana Levi Blanco (costume design), Caitlin Smith Rappoport (lighting design), Brian Hickey (sound design), Kristen Ferguson (projection design), Lauren Dubowski (dramaturgy), and Emily DeNardo (stage management).
Performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Nov. 2. Tickets are $10-$25, and are available online, by phone at 203-432-1234, and in person at the box office at 1120 Chapel St. (corner of Chapel and York streets).
